Welcome to our 49th season!
I am thrilled to announce that we will be returning to perform live at Deertrees this summer. Because of the pandemic restrictions, our upcoming season will look a little different from the past years, but I promise you that we will utilize this as a unique opportunity to bring more music to you. Our concerts at Deertrees will take place with a live audience on three Tuesday evenings on July 13, 20, and 27. Since Deertrees’ social distance seating will be limited, we are thrilled to launch “Sebago-Long Lake Music Festival On-Demand,” on-line streaming concerts on five Wednesday evenings on July 14, 21, 28 and August 4 & 11. These “On-Demand” concerts will be recorded at the Majestic Theatre in Conway, New Hampshire. We are grateful to the Mountain Top Music Center for the use of their newly renovated hall with streaming capability.
The process of putting together a season of glorious music for you has always been a real joy and challenge, but it has never been more meaningful for me as it has been this year. It is particularly joyful for me as we will still be able to celebrate classical music’s most towering figure, Ludwig van Beethoven, for his 250th anniversary. We will perform five of his masterworks this season – the “Archduke” Trio, the “Ghost” Trio, the String Trio in C Minor, the Piano Quartet, and the String Quintet, “Storm” – all masterful and brilliant works. In addition, we will perform Schubert’s beloved “Trout” Quintet and Brahms’ stunning Piano Quartet in A Major, as well as superb works by Mozart, Françaix, Saint-Georges, Bizet, Saint- Saëns, Barrière and Amy Beach. Some of these composers have influenced and have been influenced by Beethoven, and I am so excited to present these wonderful programs for you.
After much discussion and following COVID-19 protocols and travel restrictions, we have decided to bring together a core group of nine of our esteemed musicians to perform for three weeks this summer. Regretfully, we have also decided to not include wind players this season until it is safe to perform with them. Our performers will be Min-Young Kim and Keiko Tokanaga, violin; Laurie Kennedy and Matthew Sinno, viola; Mihai Marica and Bonnie Thron, cello; Jared Egan, double bass; and Yuri Funahashi and Mihae Lee, piano. I am pleased to say that all of these artists have been fully vaccinated.
We have more exciting news to share. I am delighted to announce that we will honor the legacy of our beloved violist and Music Director Emeritus, Laurie Kennedy, during the final concert at Deertrees. Also, we have begun planning for our fiftieth anniversary season next summer and have already commissioned a wonderful Maine composer, Beth Wiemann, to create a new composition for the special celebration in 2022. In addition, we are thrilled with this newly designed website and encourage you to explore further for more information on how to purchase both Deertrees and “On-Demand” concerts and how to donate to the Festival. There is a lot more detailed information on all programs, full bios of the artists, program notes and archival materials.
Thank you for your love and support during this past year. I believe we all learned that we need to experience live music more than ever, and music is powerful medicine for the soul. We miss you, and we cannot wait to share music together this summer. Until then, please be safe and stay healthy.
